If you’ve been told your embryos, eggs, or sperm need to move – to another clinic, another country, or into long-term storage – it’s completely natural to feel uneasy. These are not ordinary parcels. They may represent years of hope, difficult decisions, and a future you’ve been working towards. Handing them over to be transported can feel like one of the most vulnerable moments in the whole journey.

Your embryos don’t “thaw” in transit

The single question most people have is the simplest one: will they stay frozen?

Yes. Cryopreserved embryos, eggs, and sperm are stored at around -196°C, and they travel in a specialised container called a vapour shipper (sometimes called a dry shipper). Rather than carrying liquid nitrogen that could spill, the container holds nitrogen absorbed into a porous lining, which releases an ultra-cold vapour. This keeps the contents at cryogenic temperature – cold enough that biological activity is effectively paused – for many days at a time.

In practice, that means a journey of hours, or even a delay of a day or two, sits well within the container’s safe window. The material that leaves the storage tank arrives in exactly the same frozen state it started in.

Someone is looking after it the whole way

Depending on the service your clinic chooses, your cells may be accompanied door-to-door by a dedicated medical courier – a trained person who stays with the shipment for the entire journey and hands it over in person at the destination. This approach, known as hand-carry, is designed specifically for irreplaceable material, so that a human is present for the parts of a journey that technology alone can’t manage.

Other shipments travel as monitored freight without a courier physically alongside them. This is a legitimate, widely used method, and for many situations it’s a sensible, cost-effective choice. Your clinic will help you understand which option fits your circumstances. What matters for your peace of mind is that both approaches are built around keeping the material stable and accounted for.

What the journey typically looks like

While every transfer is a little different, most follow a similar shape:

Collection. The reproductive cell is prepared and loaded into the charged vapour shipper at the releasing clinic or storage facility, with the accompanying documentation checked and confirmed.

Transit. The container travels to its destination – by road, air, or a combination – held at cryogenic temperature the entire time and tracked along the way.

Delivery. The reproductive cell arrives at the receiving clinic, where it’s checked against the paperwork and placed back into secure cryogenic storage.

For most families, this happens quietly in the background over a day or two, and the first you hear of it is confirmation that everything has arrived safely.

What you need to do

Usually, very little. The clinics and the transport provider coordinate the logistics, permits, and paperwork between them. Your role is mostly to give consent, confirm details, and ask any questions that would help you feel settled.

A few things that can help:

  • Ask your clinic who is arranging the transport and which method they’re using.

 

  • Confirm that your consent forms and any required permits are in order early, especially for international moves, which can involve additional documentation and time.
